Our Story – Terry’s: Then and Now
In 1986 Terry and Sian Clarke bought the lease of ‘The Ranch House’, 9 Post Office Street, a mainly fish & chip cafe & takeaway, overlooking Southernhay.
Three years later they acquired a small takeaway shop around the corner in Princesshay, called ‘The Kitchen’, selling mainly sandwiches and rolls.
Terry and Sian wanted to do more hot food – fish, burgers, chips, jacket potatoes, etc, and were looking for a new name. Someone suggested ‘Terry’s Takeaway’.
Shortly after the new Terry’s Takeaway was successfully trading, The Ranch House was converted from separate sit down and takeaway areas into a bigger seating area with more tables and 42 seats, and renamed ‘Terry’s Restaurant’.
Both shops traded successfully through the 1990’s, and when Princesshay was redeveloped, both shops were relocated into the much bigger ‘Terry’s’, with seating for 66, here in Sidwell Street in 2003.
Terry and Sian sold up and retired in 2017. The business is now owned and run by Simon Welland.
During the Covid Lockdown, Simon worked hard to renovate and update the premises to give you the ‘Terry’s’ you have today.
My story is quite simple really I grew up in Exeter and most of my years were growing up in Topsham where I went to primary and middle school. I then went onto Priory high school which is no longer there and has been replaced with ISCA.
After school I took my lonely 1 grade C in home economics and went to Exeter catering college. I had decided aged 11 when going to secondary school that I was going to become a chef and then a manager and then hopefully own my own business – well that was the plan!
I moved back to Exeter in 2011 after getting divorced and had been looking for a cafe to buy eventually in 2018 I found Terry’s and it took until February 2019 to finally takeover the business.
Throughout lockdown I have been busy working on the cafe interior with new tables, a new paint job, new kitchen layout and most importantly new bathrooms! It has been a very tough and emotional time through lockdown not knowing if I will survive this pandemic as a viable business… I have tried to stay strong and motivated but I will be honest, I struggled at the start until I decided to do the refurbishment. I’m now really pleased to have a business that I am really proud to own, not saying I didn’t before, but I am now even prouder to have a beautiful cafe in the middle of Exeter.
